World TB Day 2010: On the Move Against Tuberculosis

The STOP TB Partnership's theme for World TB Day 2010 is "On the Move Against Tuberculosis: Innovate to accelerate action." This year's campaign will focus on individuals around the world who have found new ways to stop TB and can serve as an inspiration to others. The idea is to recognize people who have introduced a variety of innovations in a variety of settings.

Updated Guidelines for Using Interferon Gamma Release Assays to Detect Mycobacterium tuberculosis Infection — United States, 2010. Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. 59 (RR-5); 1-25, June 25, 2010

This report provides guidance to U.S. public health officials, health-care providers, and laboratory workers for use of FDA-approved IGRAs in the diagnosis of M. tuberculosis infection in adults and children. In brief, TSTs and IGRAs (QFT-G, QFT-GIT, and T-Spot) may be used as aids in diagnosing M. tuberculosis infection. They may be used for surveillance purposes and to identify persons likely to benefit from treatment. Multiple additional recommendations are provided that address quality control, test selection, and medical management after testing.

Delivering HIV Rapid Test Results – Video and Discussion Guide

Delivering HIV Rapid Test Results: Experiences from the Field is a short (approximately 30 minute) video that combines real stories from providers delivering rapid test results and clients learning their test results, as well as scripted vignettes that illustrate key points. It is designed so that it can be used both for individual study as well as in a group learning setting. There is also an accompanying 26-page discussion and resource guide.

New Treatment Regimen for Latent Tuberculosis Infection

The Communications, Education, and Behavioral Studies Branch (CEBSB) in the Division of Tuberculosis Elimination (DTBE) at CDC developed a video podcast on the 12-dose treatment regimen for latent tuberculosis infection. The video podcast features Dr. Kenneth Castro and is available in English and Spanish. Additional 12-dose regimen communication products are available on the CDC TB Web site (http://www.cdc.gov/tb/).

This fact sheet provides information regarding TB/HIV coinfection worldwide. It also presents key activities being conducted by the WHO in response to TB/HIV coinfection.

Treatment of Multidrug-Resistant Tuberculosis (MDR-TB)

This application, created by the WMA and the New Jersey Medical School Global Tuberculosis Institute, gives physicians the flexibility to access the course material at any time, even when they are discussing treatment options with their patients. The application was developed in collaboration with the World Health Organization with financial support from the Eli Lilly MDR-TB partnership. The application contains the eight training modules which comprise the WMA's course on MDR-TB.

Using Social Media to Expand the Reach and Effectiveness of Public Health Webinar

By the end of the webinar, participants will be able to: (1) Describe at least 4 ways that social media has been used to further public health work, (2) List the 5 factors to consider when deciding whether to use social media as part of a public health program, (3) Identify at least 2 ways to apply social media to their own TB-related endeavors.

Treating LTBI in Special Situations

Treating LTBI in Special Situations is a self-paced, online course consisting of interactive case-based modules that guide the participant through 8 topics. The topic areas include contact to drug-resistant case, hepatitis, HIV/AIDS, infants & children, pregnancy, renal failure, TNF-antagonists and transplantation. The course also includes 5 reference books that provide additional information to participants.
