Guideline: Updates on HIV and Infant Feeding

WHO guidelines on HIV and Infant Feeding in 2010 for the first time recommended the use of antiretroviral drugs to prevent postnatal transmission of HIV through breastfeeding. This resulted in a major change from an individualised counselling approach toward a public health approach regarding how maternal and child health services should routinely promote and support infant feeding practices among mothers living with HIV

Comprehensive Cervical Cancer Control: A Guide to Essential Practice

This guide includes WHO recommendations on screening and treatment of pre-cancer lesions and on HPV vaccination made through April 2014, taking account of relevant evidence-based findings published up to December 2013; emerging practices that are still being evaluated are also noted in this publication. This guide, which replaces the 2006 edition, has two new chapters, one newly organized chapter, and two substantially revised chapters. The new chapters include: Essentials for cervical a=cancer prevention and control programmes; and HPV vaccination.

New Technologies for TB Control: A Framework for Their Adoption, Introduction and Implementation

This framework identifies key issues that need to be addressed to accelerate the adoption and implementation of new and improved technologies. It provides guidance on what actions are needed when improved existing and/or new medicines, diagnostics and vaccines become available.

The document identifies challenges to retooling and proposes key steps for facilitating appropriate and timely adoption and implementation. It also provides an overview of technical and operational considerations for retooling at global and national levels.

It provides information about TB infection, explains the global plan, describes the success of the directly observed therapy short course (DOTS) treatment program, and the proposal of the global plan to expand the DOTS program. The pamphlet addresses treatment issues concerning TB-HIV coinfection and drug-resistant TB, the search for new and faster-working drug treatment, and vaccine development and makes a plea for additional funding to help meet the goals of the global plan.

A Public Health Approach for Scaling up Antiretroviral (ARV) Treatment: A Toolkit for Programme Managers

This monograph is a toolkit for planning and implementing antiretroviral (ARV) treatment programs in resource-limited settings by providing technical guidance on planning treatment programs. It lists the goals of an ARV treatment program as reducing illnesses and death due to HIV/AIDS, providing safe and effective treatment, working towards providing universal access to treatment, making the best possible use of resources, and integrating ARV treatment with other public health resources.

Perspectives and Practice in Antiretroviral Treatment: The Lighthouse: A Centre for Comprehensive HIV/AIDS Treatment and Care in Malawi: Case Study

This report presents the case study of the Lighthouse Trust in Malawi, which was established to provide quality care and counseling and to improve the quality of life of persons with HIV/AIDS, including the terminally ill. The report describes the objective of the Lighthouse, its services, management, staffing, funding, community involvement, building facilities, diagnostic services, antiretroviral treatment implementation, clients served, adherence support strategies, clinical outcomes, added improvements, and lessons learned.

This report provides information on the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Adherence to Long-term Therapies Project to improve the rates of adherence to therapies used in treating chronic conditions. The report begins by defining the term adherence and the problem of poor adherence, showing how poor adherence affects policy makers and health managers. It presents guidance for countries for improving adherence rates using information derived from lessons learned from reviews and presents the disease-specific reviews. The report also discusses nine chronic conditions that were reviewed.

National Guide to Monitoring and Evaluating Programmes for the Prevention of HIV in Infants and Young Children

This report presents guidelines for monitoring programs for the prevention of HIV/AIDS in infants and young children. It presents a list of core indicators and additonal indicators for indicating the success of these programs. Countries with prevention programs for infants and young children should have the core indicators in operation. The report gives a definition of each indicator, the rationale for its use, what it measures, measurement tools and how the indicator is measured, and its strengths and limitations.
