Cultural Competency and Tuberculosis Care: A Guide for Self-Study and Self-Assessment

This resource was developed for the public health workforce and other healthcare providers. It is intended as a tool to begin to explore the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for cultural competency in general, with a focus on TB control activities. The guide utilizes a culture general perspective and includes a self-assessment tool, teaching cases, and links to other cultural competency resources.

This is the second edition of the "Red Book". It provides guidance to national tuberculosis programmes and the laboratory network on the role of TB laboratory services. It outlines the main responsibilities within the network and the technical and organisational aspects of microscopic sputum-smear examination and the surveillance of anti-tuberculosis drug resistance. The purpose of this monograph is to complement other texts on mycobacteriology and thus it is limited in its scope and emphasis.

The guide provides epidemiological information for both TB and HIV in the country, nicknames for TB, common misperceptions surrounding the etiology, disease transmission, and cures for TB and HIV as well as the stigma surrounding these diseases.
