Community Contribution to TB Care: A Latin American Perspective

This report describes community-based tuberculosis care in Latin America, and field visits to selected community-based TB care projects to understand the origin, performance, acceptability, effectiveness, and sustainability of some existing DOTS projects. Three sites in Colombia and two in Bolivia, where the DOTS strategy is already implemented, were visited. The report demonstrates that lessons from a Latin American perspective on community-based TB care can help to understand and identify the role that the community plays in TB control in the region.

TB Guidelines for Nurses in the Care and Control of Tuberculosis and Multi-Drug Resistant Tuberculosis

This guideline is intended to help nurses in their role of detecting TB cases, providing care, and managing TB treatment. It provides a nursing approach to planning and delivering patient care, aimed at improving access and quality of care throughout the treatment period. It offers a review of TB and multidrug-resistant TB (MDR TB) and the directly observed treatment short-course (DOTS) and DOTS-Plus strategy, as well as guidance on how to adapt TB control information for local program implementation.

Toolbox: B Notification Assessment and Follow-up

This toolbox contains sample letters, forms, and protocols that can be adapted and used by local programs to contact and follow-up with recent immigrants and refugees entering the US with a B classification.

MDR-TB Planning Toolkit

The MDR-TB Planning Toolkit is designed to help assist countries develop or strengthen a multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) component within their national TB strategy or plan. Eight tools contain worksheets to assist the user through key planning steps. The toolkit is intended for countries, technical partners, international organizations, and donors.

DOTS Expansion Plan to Stop TB in the WHO European Region 2002-2006

This report explains the European DOTS Expansion plan to control TB. The plan highlights country needs and resource gaps, emphasizing collaboration with the governments of endemic countries, national and international agencies, and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs). The aim is to stimulate social and political commitment to achieving the global TB targets as part of the overall health system. The plan is based on two principles: the development of national DOTS expansion plans and partnership-building to control TB.

The Human Face of TB

This flash movie is an informational film based on the report "Tuberculosis" published by WHO. The movie puts a human face on the TB epidemic and the deadly interaction between TB and HIV. It depicts the suffering of people affected by this disease through images and interviews. Outlining the efficacy of the DOTS program, the movie makes clear that continued commitment and expanded resources are vital to combat TB.

Background Document Prepared for the Meeting of the Second ad hoc Committee on the TB Epidemic

This report is the background document of the 2nd ad hoc Committee on the TB epidemic. The committee has reviewed progress in global TB control, examined constraints to improved TB control in high-burden countries, and sought solutions to these constraints through a wide consultative process during 2003. The results of this work are set out in this background document prepared for the meeting of the 2nd ad hoc Committee in September 2003.

Forging Partnerships to Eliminate Tuberculosis: A Guide and Toolkit

The purpose of the guide is to provide TB controllers and state and local TB programs with the basic information they need to create and sustain productive TB partnerships. The purpose of the toolkit is to make it easier to implement the tips and strategies provided in the guide.
