Syphilis & MSM (Men Who Have Sex With Men)

This information sheet discusses syphilis, an STD caused by a bacterium, among men who have sex with men (MSM). It describes the disease, its transmission, stages, symptoms, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment and provides statistics on the number of cases in the United States. The sheet also discusses the increase in syphilis among MSM as well as the high rates of HIV coinfection in MSM with syphilis, and explains how syphilis infection makes individuals more susceptible to acquiring or transmitting HIV.

It describes the modes of transmission for each, the epidemiology of these diseases in the United States, the difference between acute and chronic disease as well as the symptoms, methods of diagnosis, and treatment. The information sheet explains the high risk of these diseases among gay and bisexual men and notes that experts recommend that gay and bisexual men should be tested for Hepatitis B and should be vaccinated for Hepatitis A and B.

CDC Clinical Reminder: Use of Fingerstick Devices on More Than One Person Poses Risk for Transmitting Bloodborne Pathogens

This information sheet is a reminder about the guidelines for preventing transmission of hepatitis B virus and other bloodborne pathogens from the use of finger stick devices. It explains fingerstick devices and their use, reasons why reusable devices should never be used for more than one person, when single-use auto-disabling fingerstick devices should be used, recommendations for persons performing fingerstick procedures to ensure that they are not placing persons in their care at risk for infection, and contacts for additional information.

This information sheet discusses “i know,” the new CDC-sponsored social media effort to encourage young African-Americans, aged 18 to 24, to talk openly about HIV. The program features a video, radio public service announcements with actor Jamie Foxx, and video messages from supporting celebrities and advocates. It uses Facebook, Twitter, a new Web site, and text messages to provide information about HIV and promote conversations about HIV among African-Americans.

Delivery Hospital Policies and Procedures to Prevent Perinatal Hepatitis B Virus Transmission

This information sheet lists policies and procedures for use by hospitals to prevent mother-to-child transmission of hepatitis B. The policies and procedures regard three time periods: (1) the time of admission for delivery; (2) the time after delivery for mothers with hepatitis B and their infants, for mothers with unknown hepatitis B status and their infants, and for all mothers and their infants; and (3) the time that the infant is discharged.
