HIV

This report contains recommendations from CDC on preventing transmission of HIV and the Hepatitis B virus to patients during invasive procedures. It advises health care workers to follow universal precautions, which require that blood and body fluids of all patients be handled as if they contain bloodborne pathogens.

This report provides guidelines regarding the prevention of needlestick injuries in health care settings. Bloodborne pathogens that may be transmitted during needlestick injuries include HIV, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C. The report identifies activities associated with needlestick injuries and describes Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) guidelines for the prevention of such injuries in the workplace.

The pamphlet also explains when the mother will receive the results of the test, how a baby can get HIV, the meaning of a positive test for a baby, what happens for a mother who has HIV, and for a baby who has HIV. The pamphlet emphasizes that the results of the baby’s HIV test are confidential and that doctors can only share that information with others who are providing health care.
