Cultural Competence

The Southeastern National Tuberculosis Center in collaboration with the Lung Health Center at the University of Alabama at Birmingham developed this TB-specific cultural competency guide for El Salvador. The guide provides epidemiological information for both TB and HIV in the country, nicknames for TB, common misperceptions surrounding the etiology, disease transmission, and cures for TB and HIV as well as the stigma surrounding these diseases.

The TB Stigma Assessment Tool was created to help countries recognize why, when and where stigma happens, and understand the impact stigma has. By using the tool, countries and their national TB programs can be better equipped to develop targeted health and human rights actions to address stigma.

These guides have been adapted into a series of “quick reference guides.” There are quick reference guides for the countries that have accounted for more than 60% of the TB cases among foreign-born persons over the past five years: Mexico, the Philippines, India, Vietnam, China, Guatemala, and Haiti.

The case highlighted in this issue came from a state health department nurse who lived in the small town located on a large Great Plains Indian reservation where this case unfolded. It involved an extended family spanning 4 generations, all of whom lived in the same 3-bedroom house.

The challenges of TB-HIV co-Infection are highlighted in this issue. Psychosocial aspects of HIV diagnosis and self-awareness are also discussed.
