Cultural Competence

The Southeastern National Tuberculosis Center in collaboration with the Lung Health Center at the University of Alabama at Birmingham developed this TB-specific cultural competency guide for Guatemala. The guide provides epidemiological information for both TB and HIV in the country, nicknames for TB, common misperceptions surrounding the etiology, disease transmission, and cures for TB and HIV as well as the stigma surrounding these diseases.

The video and viewer’s guide will help guide TB healthcare healthcare providers to work more effectively with interpreters. It will also help equip bilingual or multilingual TB staff with fundamental interpreting skills as they may be asked to interpret when a trained interpreter is not available.

This resource guide was developed by the Cultural Competency Subcommittee of TB ETN. The guide includes a list of organizations, readings, and assessment tools associated with cultural competence and health.

The latest issue of the New Jersey Medical School Global Tuberculosis Institute’s Cultural Competency newsletter focused on patient advocacy. The issue was released in conjunction with World TB Day. It highlights the moving story of one patient’s experience with a TB diagnosis, and how she helped other TB patients, their loved ones and healthcare providers in the struggle against TB. The issue also includes information on confronting stigma, extrapulmonary TB and advocacy resources.

A fotonovela that follows the story of Juan and his community as they cope with tuberculosis. Designed to educate Spanish-speaking foreign-born individuals about TB, the story addresses topics such as awareness, misconceptions, treatment, contact investigation.
