Advocacy/Communications

This document is intended to raise awareness about TB/HIV research priorities (i.e. areas that require urgent funding and scientific interest), help coordinate advocacy efforts, and encourage research funding. The aim is to increase the implementation of high-quality, integrated TB/HIV interventions in resource-limited settings. The document outlines a revised research priority agenda based on the latest evidence in six key areas of TB and HIV co-infection.

The purpose of this document is to highlight cases in which Advocacy, Communication and Social Mobilization (ACSM) interventions have contributed to a positive outcome of tuberculosis (TB) control activities directed to a range of audiences and settings. It is intended for on-the-ground stakeholders who are interested in successfully integrating ACSM strategies and activities into TB control programming, as well as for decision-makers who can provide greater political and financial support for ACSM activities at the national, sub-national and international level.

This document addresses a broad range of ethical issues arising in TB programmes, ranging from informed consent and isolation to health-care workers' rights and obligations, and clinical and epidemiological studies.

This December 2009 presentation aims to foster reflection on and a debate about the role of communication in addressing tuberculosis (TB). The authors propose a conceptual framework of communication and its relation to ethics, building from previous experience in order work against stigma and discrimination in health care contexts by developing the advocacy, communication, and social mobilisation (ACSM) model.

This advocacy brochure shows how one million lives can be saved by the end of 2015 by preventing and treating tuberculosis among people living with HIV.

This training curriculum for tuberculosis (TB) health care workers introduces principles of interpersonal communication and counseling of clients on TB and HIV and provides practical experience in TB and HIV counseling skills in a three-day workshop. The training package also includes PowerPoint presentations on parts 1, 2, and 4 for the trainers; and handouts for the participants.

This animation provides a visual guide to the most common symptoms of TB and advises people to contact a doctor if they think they might have the illness.

The latest issue of the New Jersey Medical School Global Tuberculosis Institute’s Cultural Competency newsletter focused on patient advocacy. The issue was released in conjunction with World TB Day. It highlights the moving story of one patient’s experience with a TB diagnosis, and how she helped other TB patients, their loved ones and healthcare providers in the struggle against TB. The issue also includes information on confronting stigma, extrapulmonary TB and advocacy resources.

In January 2012, members of the Sentinel Project on Pediatric Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis reached out to organizations treating children with DR-TB in diverse settings and asked them to submit short stories and photos. These stories pay tribute to the thousands of children who, with the help of dedicated health care providers and family members, have fought and overcome DR-TB.

This issue focuses on the story of Raquel Orduño, whose on-going TB advocacy began with a group of people who came together to document and portray their experiences with TB along the United States (U.S.)-Mexico border. It also includes information on advocacy, social support and supportive language.
