Men Who Have Sex with Men

This report summarizes results of a survey of 29 black 17-25 year-old men who have sex with men (MSM) who were diagnosed with HIV infection during January 2006-April 2008 in the three-county Jackson Mississippi area. The survey was conducted by the Mississippi State Department of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The study examined risk behavior and HIV testing behavior of the participants.

This report summarizes results of a study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the San Francisco Department of Public Health to gather data on rectal and pharyngeal gonorrhea and chlamydia testing at screening sites managed by six gay-focused community-based organizations (CBOs) in five US cities during 2007. The purpose of the study was to determine sexually transmitted disease testing practices among CBOs serving men who have sex with men (MSM). Findings indicate that three organizations collected samples for nucleic acid amplification (NAA) testing and three for culture.

This report summarizes CDC’s National HIV Behavioral Surveillance System (NHBS) data collected in 2008 from 21 metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs) using an anonymous cross-sectional interview of men at venues where men who have sex with men (MSM) congregate. The data show that of 8,153 MSM interviewed and tested in the 21 MSAs participating in NHBS in 2008, HIV prevalence was 19 percent, with non-Hispanic blacks having the highest prevalence (28 percent), followed by Hispanics (18 percent), non-Hispanic whites (16 percent), and persons who were multiracial or of other race (17 percent).

This report describes the results of CDC’s analysis of HIV testing conducted in 21 cities as part of the National HIV Behavioral Surveillance System (NHBS) to assess whether MSM were tested as recommended (at least annually) and whether more frequent testing was indicated. Results indicated that of 7,271 MSM interviewed and tested, who had not reported a previous positive HIV test, 61 percent had been tested during the past 12 months. Of these, seven percent had a new, positive HIV test result when tested as part of NHBS.

This article reports on a matched case-control study and viral analysis that examined the role of sexual transmission of Hepatics C virus (HCV) among HIV-infected men who have sex with men. In all, 22 case-patients and 53 control subjects were enrolled in the study. Participants completed self-administered questionnaires regarding sexual practices and drug-use behaviors during the 12 months preceding diagnosis or preceding the questionnaire.

In this report, the CDC used the National HIV Surveillance System data to estimate among youths, prevalence rates of diagnosed HIV infection in 2009 and the number of new infections in 2010. CDC used the 2009 and 2010 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System for 9th -12th grade students and the 2010 National Health Interview Survey for persons 18-24 years. Prevalence of diagnosed HIV was 69.5 per 100,000 youths at the end of 2009. Youth accounted for 12,200 (25.7 percent) new HIV infections in 2010.
