This information sheet describes hepatitis A, a disease of the liver caused by the hepatitis A virus (HAV), which is a picornavirus that enters the blood stream via the intestines. It explains that HAV is the most common type of viral hepatitis in the United States with an estimated 3,000 new infections annually.
