Recommendations for Public Health Surveillance of Syphilis in the United States

This monograph reports on updated syphilis surveillance guidelines for use in improving and developing syphilis surveillance techniques and making collection and reporting of syphilis surveillance data more uniform. The monograph discusses the purposes and uses of the two main components of syphilis surveillance: case reporting and prevalence monitoring. It also provides case definitions to be used for syphilis, reporting formats and intervals, and guidelines for provider-based and laboratory-based case reporting.

Report to Congress: Prevention of Genital Human Papillomavirus Infection

This report discusses the epidemiology of genital human papillomavirus (HPV) infection as well as its transmission and prevention. HPV is primarily transmitted by genital contact through sexual intercourse. The report discusses studies on reducing transmission by reducing the duration of infectiousness by treatment, reducing infectivity (condoms, microbicides), reducing the number of sex partners, and the development of vaccines that reduce susceptibility by stimulating the immune system.

MMWR: STD-Prevention Counseling Practices and Human Papillomavirus Opinions Among Clinicians with Adolescent Patients–United States, 2004

This report discusses CDC research on evaluating the STD risk assessment, counseling, and education practices of US health care providers during routine adolescent check-ups, and provider opinions regarding methods to prevent HPV. CDC mailed surveys to 5,386 clinicians in seven specialties that commonly provide STD diagnosis, treatment, and prevention. Data were collected on clinician demographic, practice, and patient characteristics; STD risk assessment, counseling and education practices; and opinions regarding HPV infection prevention methods.

Recommendations for Partner Services Programs for HIV Infection, Syphilis, Gonorrhea, and Chlamydial Infection

This report provides updated, integrated recommendations for partner services for HIV infection, as well as infection with syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia. These updated recommendations replace the following publications: (1) Program Operations Guidelines for STD Prevention, CDC 2001; and (2) HIV Partner Counseling and Referral Services Guidance, CDC 1998. The updated recommendations serve as a basis for delivery of partner services and related training and technical assistance.

Nia: A Program of Purpose: A Brief Safer-Sex Intervention in HIV Clinics

This pamphlet describes Nia, a group-level, video-based intervention for African American men aged 18 years and older. The goal of the program is to reduce sexual risk behavior among African American men who have sex with women. The pamphlet discusses the goals; how the program works; the theory behind the intervention; research findings; core elements, key characteristics, and procedures; adapting the program to a different target population; resource requirements; recruitment; policies and standards; quality assurance activities; and monitoring and evaluation.

Sexually Transmitted Disease Surveillance 2007

This report presents statistics and trends for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in the US through 2007. The information is based on (1) case reports from state and local STD programs; (2) the Regional Infertility Prevention Projects, the National Job Training Program (formerly the Job Corps), the Corrections STD Prevalence Monitoring Project, and the Men Who Have Sex with Men (MSM) Prevalence Monitoring Project; (3) the Gonococcal Isolate Surveillance Project (GISP); and (4) national surveys implemented by federal and private organizations. The report consists of four parts.

Sister to Sister: An HIV Risk Reduction Intervention for African American Women

This information sheet describes the Sister to Sister program, a brief, one-on-one skill-based HIV/sexually transmitted disease (STD) risk-reduction behavioral intervention for sexually active African American women aged 18-45 years old who have male partners. The intervention is implemented in a primary health care setting by nurses, health educators, or other professional clinic staff, and is designed to be integrated into the provider’s standard clinical practice.

Adolescent Sexual Health in Europe and the US - Why the Difference?

This information sheet compares the sexual health and behaviors of adolescents in Europe to those of adolescents in the United States. It provides epidemiological data comparing European and American adolescents regarding pregnancy, birth and abortion rates, STD rates, contraceptive use, and sexual behaviors. It makes recommendations for the improvement of adolescent sexual health in the U.S., based on the results of the survey findings.

d-up Defend Yourself! A Community-Level Intervention for Black MSM

This information sheet describes a community-level risk-reduction intervention that attempts to change social norms and perceptions of black men who have sex with men (MSM) regarding safer sex practices and improve their sense of self-worth as black MSM. It uses individuals, called opinion leaders, who are respected and trusted by their peers, to promote the benefits of consistent condom use and increase feelings of positive self-worth among friends and acquaintances. Opinion leaders are identified during the community discovery and recruited by an agency implementing d-up!

Many Men, Many Voices: A Group-Level Intervention for Gay Men of Color

This information sheet describes Many Men, Many Voices (3MV), a 7-session group level intervention program to prevent HIV and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) among black men who have sex with men. It addresses factors that influence the behavior of black MSM: cultural, religious, and social norms; interactions between HIV and other STDs; sexual relationship dynamics; and social influences of racism and homophobia on HIV risk behaviors. The sheet includes contact information for the program and for training.
