Children and Young People in a World of AIDS

This pamphlet examines HIV among children and adolescents internationally. The pamphlet discusses the epidemiology of HIV/AIDS among young persons, the factors and behaviors that place young persons at risk for HIV, statistics on children who have been orphaned as a result of the epidemic, and intervention strategies to prevent HIV transmission to children and adolescents, including mother-to-child transmission.

HIV/AIDS Surveillance Report: Cases of HIV Infection and AIDS in the United States and Dependent Areas, 2006

This report presents estimated numbers of cases of HIV/AIDS from the 38 areas (33 states and five US dependent areas) with confidential name-based HIV infection reporting since at least 2003. It also includes the following statistics reported to the CDC through 2006: (1) cases of HIV/AIDS and AIDS; (2) deaths of persons with AIDS; (3) persons living with HIV/AIDS, AIDS, or HIV infection; (4) length of survival after AIDS diagnosis, and (5) reports of cases of HIV/AIDS, AIDS, and HIV infection.

HIV/AIDS Surveillance Report: Cases of HIV Infection and AIDS in the United States and Dependent Areas, 2007

This report presents estimated numbers of cases of diagnosed HIV/AIDS from the 39 areas (34 states and five US dependent areas) with confidential name-based HIV infection reporting since at least 2003. It also includes the following statistics reported to the CDC through 2007: (1) cases of HIV/AIDS, HIV incidence, and cases of AIDS; (2) deaths; (3) persons living with HIV/AIDS, HIV infection (not AIDS), or AIDS; (4) survival after AIDS diagnosis, and (5) reports of cases of HIV Infection (not AIDS), AIDS, and HIV/AIDS reported through 2007.

Diagnoses of HIV Infection and AIDS among Adolescents and Young Adults in the United States and 5 U.S. Dependent Areas, 2006–2009

This report complements the 2009 HIV Surveillance Report by presenting additional data on persons 13-24 years old from the 45 areas (40 states and 5 US dependent areas) with confidential name-based HIV infection reporting since at least January 2006. It also includes the statistics reported to the CDC through 2009.

MMWR: Vital Signs: HIV Infection, Testing, and Risk Behaviors Among Youths - United States

In this report, the CDC used the National HIV Surveillance System data to estimate among youths, prevalence rates of diagnosed HIV infection in 2009 and the number of new infections in 2010. CDC used the 2009 and 2010 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System for 9th -12th grade students and the 2010 National Health Interview Survey for persons 18-24 years. Prevalence of diagnosed HIV was 69.5 per 100,000 youths at the end of 2009. Youth accounted for 12,200 (25.7 percent) new HIV infections in 2010.
