Prisons and AIDS: UNAIDS Point of View

This technical update reviews the incidence and prevalence of HIV in correctional facilities around the world and explains how this morbidity rate impacts the general public. The risk factors for HIV transmission in correctional facilities are reviewed and include drug injection, unprotected sexual relations, tattooing, skin piercing, blood brotherhood rites, lack of education, TB, and overcrowding. Suggestions for preventing the transmission of HIV in correctional settings are presented.

Tuberculosis and AIDS

This report, for health professionals, government agencies, and organizations, presents information about HIV/AIDS and TB. It provides epidemiological statistics concerning the relationship between HIV/AIDS and TB, including incidence, morbidity rates, and mortality rates. It discusses TB and HIV transmission, how HIV can facilitate the development of active TB, and recommendations for the prevention of TB among HIV-positive persons.

HIV-Related Opportunistic Diseases

This report provides information about opportunistic infections (OIs) among persons with HIV. It discusses the causes, effects, and treatments available and includes a comparison of costs of treatment and prophylaxis for the most common OIs. It provides recommendations to improve healthcare and prevent OIs among HIV-positive persons.

Sexually Transmitted Diseases: Policies and Principles for Prevention and Care

This report discusses issues concerning the prevention and treatment of STDs. The report examines the significance of STDs in the transmission of HIV/AIDS, and the history of STD control. It explains the primary and secondary prevention practices for STDs. It provides information about access to STD care in the public and private sectors, categorical STD clinics, general health care structures, and referral services.

The Essential Handbook: Radio and HIV/AIDS : Making a Difference

This guide, for radio practitioners, health workers, and donors, discusses the use of radio to promote the prevention of HIV/AIDS in developing countries. The guide discusses the following issues in using radio as a health communications tool: conducting initial research and needs assessment; selecting appropriate materials; pre-testing programs; scheduling programs; developing an HIV/AIDS campaign; building partnerships with media and other organizations; monitoring and evaluating radio programs; and working towards sustainable and effective HIV/AIDS radio broadcasting.

This monograph makes recommendations regarding HIV/AIDS-related policy development worldwide. It emphasizes the importance of good leadership at every level to overcome this epidemic. The monograph reviews the global epidemiology and overall impact of HIV/AIDS. It makes recommendations about how to improve HIV/AIDS care and prevention programs through healthcare and political policies and emphasizes the need to protect human rights and solve, nationally and internationally, the many disparities that fuel this epidemic.

Working With Men for HIV Prevention and Care

This monograph provides guidelines for working with men for the prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS. It describes projects that offer various contexts for working with men. Twelve projects were selected because they demonstrated the importance of working with men and represented a diverse range of interventions with men. The projects address the issue of incorporating gender identification among men within programs, encouraging men to engage in healthy dialogues with men about relationships, working in challenging environments, and working with men at high risk for HIV/AIDS.

Children and Young People in a World of AIDS

This pamphlet examines HIV among children and adolescents internationally. The pamphlet discusses the epidemiology of HIV/AIDS among young persons, the factors and behaviors that place young persons at risk for HIV, statistics on children who have been orphaned as a result of the epidemic, and intervention strategies to prevent HIV transmission to children and adolescents, including mother-to-child transmission.

This pamphlet examines HIV among children and adolescents internationally. The pamphlet discusses the epidemiology of HIV/AIDS among young persons, the factors and behaviors that place them at risk for HIV, and intervention strategies to prevent the spread of HIV to children and adolescents, as well as maternal transmission to infants.
