Scale up of HIV-Related Prevention, Diagnosis, Care and Treatment for Infants and Children: A Programming Framework

This monograph provides a programming framework to assist national health managers and implementing partners in resource-constrained settings that have a high burden of HIV. The monograph gives information about scaling up HIV prevention, and the diagnosis, care, and treatment for children exposed to, or infected with, HIV. The framework emphasizes the importance of early HIV diagnosis, cotrimoxazole preventive treatment for children who are exposed to, or who are infected with, HIV, and timely entry to care and treatment. The framework lists seven strategies identified as key to scaling up national responses and outlines actions required to incorporate these strategies into efforts to scale up national programs. The framework has four major sections: (1) background information to put the issue of HIV care and treatment for children into context; (2) the full package of interventions for infants and other children who are exposed to or have HIV; (3) the seven recommended strategies for ensuring their delivery; and (4) links to key resources.
