This information sheet is the result of a task force organized by the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases to prioritize barriers to pneumococcal vaccination among African Americans and U.S. Hispanics. Through large group discussions and smaller working sessions focused on specific patient populations, the task force identified the three key barriers to better immunization in populations with disparities: lack of public awareness about pneumococcal disease and available prevention; general distrust of vaccines and government/medical systems and; challenges in continuity of care and access to a primary care provider.
