Nia: A Program of Purpose: A Brief Safer-Sex Intervention in HIV Clinics

This pamphlet describes Nia, a group-level, video-based intervention for African American men aged 18 years and older. The goal of the program is to reduce sexual risk behavior among African American men who have sex with women. The pamphlet discusses the goals; how the program works; the theory behind the intervention; research findings; core elements, key characteristics, and procedures; adapting the program to a different target population; resource requirements; recruitment; policies and standards; quality assurance activities; and monitoring and evaluation. It includes contact information for training, technical assistance, and planning and implementation. The program has been packaged by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC’s) Replication of Effective Interventions and Diffusion of Effective Behavioral Interventions (DEBI) projects.
