This fact sheet shares information regarding Doxy PEP usage. Doxy PEP is also known as Doxycycline Post-exposure Prophylaxis. Doxycycline is an antibiotic commonly used to treat bacterial infections. Doxy PEP can prevent bacterial STIs like syphilis, chlamydia, and gonorrhea when taken after condomless sex.

This fact sheet shares prevention and general fact information regarding  sexually transmitted infections (STIs), which are infections primarily caused by bacteria and viruses spread from person to person during vaginal, oral, or anal sex or other intimate contact. Some STIs, such as herpes and HPV, are spread through skin-to-skin contact. 

This webpage explains that more than 30 different bacteria, viruses and parasites are known to be transmitted through sexual contact, including vaginal, anal and oral sex. Some STIs can also be transmitted from mother-to-child during pregnancy, childbirth and breastfeeding. Eight pathogens are linked to the greatest incidence of STIs. Of these, 4 are currently curable: syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia and trichomoniasis. The other 4 are viral infections: hepatitis B, herpes simplex virus (HSV), HIV and human papillomavirus (HPV).

This video presentation by the San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH) on implementation of Doxy-PEP in a single clinic which offered Doxy-PEP to all clients using HIV PrEP and saw bacterial STIs decrease among those who used Doxy-PEP by nearly 60% in less than a year, with the highest declines for syphilis (78%) and chlamydia (67%).

This guideline discusses the interim recommendations for the use of doxycycline for post-exposure prophylaxis (doxy PEP) for the prevention of certain bacterial sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
