Gonorrea: La Realidad

This pamphlet provides information on gonorrhea, an STD. It lists basic facts about the disease, the symptoms experienced by a woman and a man, transmission, testing, and treatment with antibiotics. It notes that an individual may be reinfected with gonorrhea from an untreated or new partner and advises a person with gonorrhea to inform recent sex partners so that they can get tested and treated.

Syphilis: The Facts

This pamphlet provides information about the STD syphilis. It lists basic facts about the disease and discusses transmission, symptoms for men and women, testing, and treatment. The pamphlet explains that recent sex partners should be notified, as they would need to be tested for the disease and treated if infected. Syphilis can be cured with antibiotic treatment, but an individual can be reinfected.

Human Papillomavirus Vaccination Coverage Among Adolescent Girls, 2007–2012, and Postlicensure Vaccine Safety Monitoring, 2006–2013 — United States

This report summarizes national HPV vaccination coverage levels among adolescent girls aged 13-17 years from the 2007-2012 National Immunization Survey-Teen (NIS-Teen) and national postlicensure vaccine safety monitoring. It states that despite availability of safe and effective vaccines and ample opportunities for vaccine delivery in the health-care setting, HPV vaccination coverage among adolescent girls did not increase from 2001-2012. The report finishes by stating that an additional 53,000 cases could be prevented by increasing the 3-dose HPV vaccine coverage by 80%.

MMWR: Recommendations for the Laboratory-Based Detection of Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae – 2014

This report updates CDC’s 2002 recommendations regarding screening tests to detect C. trachomatis and N. gonorrhoeae infections and provides new recommendations regarding optimal specimen types, the use of tests to detect rectal and oropharyngeal C. trachomatis and N. gonorrhoeae infections, and information regarding when supplemental testing is indicated.

This manual provides guidelines for treatment and health care maintenance of persons with HIV infection. It discusses testing and counseling, the initial evaluation of patients, initiating antiretroviral therapy, what drugs should be used, adverse reactions, and the issue of patient adherence to therapy. It also includes special considerations for treating pregnant women.

CDC Grand Rounds: Reducing the Burden of HPV-Associated Cancer and Disease

This report discusses use of vaccines to prevent human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. It explains that HPV is the most common STD in the United States and that the high risk types of HPV cause cancers of the cervix, vagina, vulva, penis and anus as well as oropharyngeal cancers, while low risk HPV causes anogenital warts and warts in the throat and airway. Two types of HPV vaccine are licensed by the US Food and Drug Administration.

Primary and Secondary Syphilis –– United States, 2005-2013

This report contains CDC analysis of notifiable disease surveillance data on reported syphilis, including patient demographics and stage of syphilis as reported by health departments to the National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System (NNDSS) for cases diagnosed during (2005-2013). Trends in annual primary and secondary syphilis were analyzed for 2005-2013; geographic trends were analyzed by US census region, age group, and NNDSS racial/ethnic categories.

MMWR: Human Papillomavirus Vaccination Coverage Among Adolescents, 2007-2013, and Postlicensure Vaccine Safety Monitoring, 2006-2014 – United States

To assess progress with HPV vaccination coverage among adolescents aged 13–17 years, characterize adherence with recommendations for HPV vaccination by the 13th birthday, and describe HPV vaccine adverse reports received postlicensure, CDC analyzed data from the 2007–2013 National Immunization Survey-Teen (NIS-Teen) and national postlicensure vaccine safety data among females and males. Vaccination coverage with =1 dose of any HPV vaccine increased significantly from 53.8% (2012) to 57.3% (2013) among adolescent girls and from 20.8% (2012) to 34.6% (2013) among adolescent boys.

Evidence-Based HIV/STD Prevention Intervention for Black Men Who Have Sex with Men

This report summarizes findings of a community-based organization in New York City that evaluated and demonstrated efficacy of the Many Men, Many Voices HIV/STD prevention intervention to reduce sexual risk behaviors and increase protective behaviors among black men who have sex with men (MSM). The intervention focuses on social determinants of health that can influence health and well-being of black MSM at high risk for HIV infection. The report also highlights CDC’s efforts to disseminate this evidence- based behavioral intervention across the United States.

MMWR: Human Papillomavirus Vaccination Recommendations of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP)

This report summarizes the epidemiology of human papillomavirus (HPV) and associated diseases, describes the licensed HPV vaccines, provides updated data from clinical trials and postlicensure safety studies, and compiles recommendations from CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) for use of HPV vaccines. Persistent infection with oncogenic HPV types can cause cervical cancer in women as well as other anogenital and oropharyngeal cancers in women and men. HPV also causes genital warts.
