Pneumococcal Disease Call to Action: Preventing Pneumococcal Disease in Adults with Chronic Conditions

This information sheet is the result of a task force organized by the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases to prioritize barriers to pneumococcal vaccination among U.S. adults. Through large group discussions and smaller working sessions focused on specific patient populations, the task force identified the four biggest barriers to pneumococcal vaccine in patients with chronic health conditions: competing priorities during patient visits; lack of ownership among healthcare professionals for educating and vaccinating patients; challenges in determining vaccination status; and complexity of recommendations for vaccination and revaccination. The fact sheet then identifies solutions to those barriers.
