This report summarizes national surveillance TB data for 1998 and compares them with similar data from 1992. The report includes number of reported cases and the percentage change in number of cases and rates by state and year as well as by sex, age, and year for 1992 and 1998. Findings indicate that the number of TB cases has decreased and that trends in the number of reported cases and TB incidence varied by geographic area and population characteristics. Although the report shows a decrease in TB rates, the TB elimination goal of 3.5 cases per 100,000 by 2000 and <1 case per 1,000,000 population by 2010 is unlikely to be achieved at the current rate of decrease. The Advisory Council for the Elimination of TB (ACET) has reassessed its 1989 plan and updated the recommendations for TB elimination in the US.
