A 2014 study found that one-third of all teens didn’t talk about issues of sex and sexuality at all during their annual health visits. As a provider, when you ask a young patient, “Why are you here?” he or she may lie and respond, “I’m just here for my regular exam.” When in reality, teens may avoid sexual health conversations because they are worried about issues such as confidentiality and not wanting to feel judged by their healthcare provider. Providers play a critical role in encouraging their adolescent patients to get tested for STDs.
