Surveillance Brief: Terms, Definitions, and Calculations Used in CDC HIV Surveillance Publications
This information sheet explains terms, definitions, and methods of calculation used in HIV surveillance data, and the uses of these data. It defines unadjusted data, adjusted (estimated) data, AIDS diagnoses and deaths of persons with an AIDS diagnoses, and diagnoses of HIV infection and deaths of persons with a diagnosis of HIV infection. It also defines HIV incidence, persons living with a diagnosis of HIV infection or AIDS, incidence rate, prevalence rate, stage of disease, and transmission category.
New HIV Infections in the United States, 2006 - 2009
This information sheet presents the latest estimates of new HIV infections (HIV incidence) in the United States released by CDC. These estimates are included in the CDC report, "Estimated HIV Incidence among Adults and Adolescents in the United States 2007-2010," which updates previously published estimates for 2007 through 2009. The new estimates indicate two trends: early signs of a decrease in new HIV infections among black women and an increase in new infections among young gay and bisexual men.
HIV Among Youth in the US: Protecting a Generation
This information sheet provides data on youth and HIV in the United States. It states that 12,000 youth were infected with HIV in 2010, that 1 in 4 of the 50,000 people infected with HIV each year is 13 to 24 years old, the greatest number of new infections are among gay and bisexual youth, and nearly half of all new infections among youth are in African American males.

Sexually Transmitted Infections among Young Americans
This infographic, in the form of an information sheet, highlights the impact, causes, and consequences of STDs among young people – and what they can do to protect themselves. While STDs affect individuals of all ages, STDs take a particularly heavy toll on young people. CDC estimates that youth ages 15-24 make up just more than 25 percent of the sexually active population, but account for half of the 20 million new STIs that occur in the United States each year. The infographic provides statistics on gonorrhea, chlamydia, HPV, genital herpes, HIV, and syphilis.
HIV and AIDS in America: A Snapshot
This information sheet provides an overview of HIV/AIDS in the United States, including the number of persons with the disease. It states that the number of new infections has remained stable, but that an estimated 50,000 persons who become newly infected every year is too high. It notes that nearly 15,000 people with AIDS still die each year in the United States. The information sheet provides statistics on the heavily affected populations by risk group and race/ethnicity.
Incidence, Prevalence, and Cost of Sexually Transmitted Infections in the United States
This fact sheet explains two analyses published by CDC that examined the severe human and economic burden of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in the United States. The new estimates indicate that there are about 20 million new U.S. infections each year, half of which occur among the nation’s youth. Also, there are more than 110 million STIs in the United States, which cost the health care system approximately $16 billion in medical costs alone.
HIV/AIDS Surveillance Report: Social Determinants of Health Among Adults With Diagnosed HIV Infection in 18 Areas, 2005-2009
This report focuses on the social determinants of health (SDH) and its crossover to HIV rates in the United States from 2005-2009. It explains that SDH refers to the overlapping social structures and economic systems that are responsible for most health inequities. Thirteen tables break down rates of HIV diagnoses by indicators such as sex, age, area of residence, race, and transmission category.
Indian Health Surveillance Report: Sexually Transmitted Diseases 2011
This report presents statistics and trends for STDs among American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/AN) in the United States. The report is divided into two parts: the National STD Profile (2006-2011) contains text and figures that provide an overview of STD morbidity among AI/AN in the U.S.; and the IHS profiles (2002-2011) present STD rates and trends for the 12 IHS administrative areas. Data are based on cases of nationally notifiable STDs reported to CDC from the STD control programs and health departments in the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and selected U.S. cities.
