HIV Risk for Lesbians, Bisexuals & Other Women Who Have Sex With Women

This report discusses the risk of HIV/AIDS for lesbians and women who have sex with women (WSW). It reviews research on the risks of contracting HIV faced by lesbians and WSW and the context of HIV among women. The report considers how lesbians contract HIV or AIDS, the belief that WSW are part of a low-risk population, and the activities that increase risk, such as injection drug use, sex with men, barriers to health access, gender bias and discrimination and their effect on WSW’s self esteem, and violence.

This report discusses the hepatitis C virus (HCV), how it is treated, and how it can be prevented. The report examines the epidemiology of HCV. It discusses the screening tests, history, general treatment, and postexposure prophylaxis for HCV. The report explains the ways that HCV can be transmitted from person to person and how the virus can be spread through bodily fluid. It identifies the most serious high risk behaviors such as injection drug use and certain sexual practices. The report cites the risks associated with health care work.

The monograph discusses the level and characteristics of adolescent risk-taking today, common elements of successful prevention programs along with an explanation of criteria used to evaluate programs, the challenges facing practitioners trying to replicate promising programs and suggestions for meeting those challenges, and a prevention readiness questionnaire. The monograph presents profiles of 51 prevention programs whose behavioral evaluations demonstrate their effectiveness.

This pamphlet discusses a study, conducted at two health centers, to examine the effects of Educational Peer Counseling and Parent-Participant Contingency Contracting on treatment adherence of adolescents undergoing preventive TB treatment. Adolescents were randomly divided into a peer counseling group, contingency contract group, a group that combined both peer counseling and contingency contracting, and a fourth group that received the usual clinic care. A slightly higher number of participants in the combined interventions group completed treatment.

This pamphlet provides information on prevention of HIV. It uses a restaurant menu theme to describe various forms of sexual activity, but instead of a price for items, it rates the level of HIV risk of each activity. The dessert menu lists several totally risk-free activities, while the entrees discuss activities that pose a risk and how to reduce that risk, including using condoms consistently and correctly. It illustrates proper use of male and female condoms, describes the transmission and symptoms of HIV, and suggests that individuals get tested if they think they are at risk.
