This report presents an interim World Health Organization (WHO) clinical staging system and case definitions for HIV/AIDS. This staging system is a revision of the WHO 1994 clinical staging system and AIDS case definitions. The revisions are designed to strengthen clinical staging and case definitions for adults and children; simplify and standardize definitions for use by health providers; and improve patient management, monitoring, and surveillance. The clinical staging is reported in tables for those 15 years and older and infants and children under 15 years all with positive HIV antibody test or other laboratory evidence of HIV infection.
