Indian Health Surveillance Report: Sexually Transmitted Diseases 2011

This report presents statistics and trends for STDs among American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/AN) in the United States. The report is divided into two parts: the National STD Profile (2006-2011) contains text and figures that provide an overview of STD morbidity among AI/AN in the U.S.; and the IHS profiles (2002-2011) present STD rates and trends for the 12 IHS administrative areas. Data are based on cases of nationally notifiable STDs reported to CDC from the STD control programs and health departments in the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and selected U.S. cities. Although AI/AN are one of the smallest racial groups in the US, they are disproportionately affected by STDs, especially in young women. In 2011, among all races and ethnicities, AI/AN had the second highest rates of chlamydia and gonorrhea and the third highest rate of primary and secondary syphilis.
