This information sheet discusses hepatitis B, a contagious liver disease caused by infection with the hepatitis B virus. It explains the difference between acute infection and chronic disease and describes Hepatitis B transmission, whether the disease is common, its symptoms, how it is diagnosed, the seriousness of the disease, the importance of being tested for Hepatitis B and who should be tested, treatment, how persons with hepatitis B can take care of their liver, and how the disease can be prevented by getting vaccinated.
