Genital Herpes: The Facts

This pamphlet provides information about the STD genital herpes. It explains how genital herpes is spread, the type of symptoms if any, and treatments for the symptoms, since there is no cure for the disease. The pamphlet states that there are two types of genital herpes: HSV1 and HSV2, both of which cause sores or blisters on or around the genitals. It explains that if infected with genital herpes, an individual can expect to have several outbreaks a year and has a higher risk of getting HIV infection from unprotected sex with a partner living with HIV. A pregnant woman with genital herpes may also pass the infection to a baby. It explains when an individual should get tested for genital herpes, partner notification, avoiding sex when sores or symptoms are visible, how to prevent or lower the risk of getting the disease, and suppressive therapy to reduce the chance of passing the infection to sex partners.
